Overview The Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Act 1999 (the EPBC Act) is the Australian Government's central piece of environmental legislation. The EPBC Act focuses on the Australian Government interests on the protection of matters of national environmental significance, with the state of NSW having responsibility for matters of state and local significance. The EPBC Act comes into play when a proposal has the potential to have a significant impact on a matter of national environmental significance.
