Overview The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 (POCTAA) is the primary legislation governing animal welfare in New South Wales. Its core objectives are to prevent cruelty and ensure animals are treated humanely. As a university operating agricultural field stations, livestock facilities, and animal research laboratories, UNE bears direct corporate responsibility for the welfare, transport, and treatment of animals (including livestock, dogs, and wildlife). Note: While the Animal Research Act 1985 regulates strict scientific procedures, the general welfare obligations of the POCTA Act (and Bill) still apply broadly to housing, transport, breeding, and husbandry outside active scientific procedures.
