Overview The objects of this Act are as follows—
(a) to prohibit the possession and use of all automatic and self-loading rifles and shotguns except in special circumstances,
(b) to establish an integrated licensing and registration scheme for all firearms,
(c) to require each person who possesses or uses a firearm under the authority of a licence to prove a genuine reason for possessing or using the firearm,
(d) to provide strict requirements that must be satisfied in relation to licensing of firearms and the acquisition and supply of firearms,
(e) to ensure that firearms are stored and conveyed in a safe and secure manner,
(f) to provide for compensation in respect of, and an amnesty period to enable the surrender of, certain prohibited firearms.

Description University must recognise and take effective steps in the case of domestic violence orders being notified with respect to a holder of a permit or access to weapons on behalf of the University. Incidents to be notified to ??? for reporting as required to NSW Police.

Description A person cannot be in possession of a firearm in NSW without a licence or permit.

All approved users who have access and/or handle firearms must hold an individual Firearms Licence and must follow the NSW Police FIREARMS (LONGARMS) USERS GUIDE

Return to Top No Firearms on Campus
Description The University of New England does not permit firearms on any of its campuses or leased premises unless there are exigent circumstances for example on duty police or defence personnel, or for the purposes of animal control by a licensed professional.

Any application by staff to use or store a firearm on campus and the reason for doing so must be approved by the Chief Operating Officer in writing prior to bringing the firearm onto campus and only under lawful circumstances.

Return to Top Safekeeping of firearms
Description When not in use, all firearms on the Farms or campus must be stored in a gun safe that is securely attached to the ground in accordance with the Act and its Regulations. The bolt must be removed and stored with the ammunition in a locked compartment separate to the firearm. Gun safe location to be documented.


The University is required to cooperate with any required inspections relating to firearms storage.
